Medical Summer School
On Saturday the 18th May 2024 we held our inaugural Medical Summer School for young people local to Warwick who were interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. We had a packed out room at Acorn House, with lots of enthusiasm and questions. The multidisciplinary faculty comprised eight members of SWFT staff from management, nursing, work experience team and medical backgrounds. We also had eight of our University of Buckingham medical students join the faculty to share their experiences.
The morning saw the young people learning clinical skills such as airway management, assessment of breathing, and the basics of undertaking a blood pressure and heart rate. During the afternoon, delegates put these skills into action in the state of the art simulation suite in Acorn House, through a simulation of a patient with sepsis. They also attended workshops including Working in the NHS – the UKs largest employer and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. The day concluded with a series of panels to allow the delegates to ask questions of the faculty regarding their routes into the NHS and how their job fits into the picture of patient centred care. Big thanks go to the Work Experience team for organising the logistics, and the faculty who put huge amounts of work in to make the day a success!
